Often, existing wire or cable products can simply be customized to meet a client’s needs, saving time and expenses. Quality Cable Source, Inc. excels at this process, and recently modified 1,000 sensors with Tyco connectors to generate custom wire harnesses designed for use with diesel engines for a customer in the automotive industry. Using a customer-supplied material, Quality Cable Source’s expert electronics technicians used hand tools to cut and replace with Tyco connectors. Even though the customization process was a hand operation, Quality Cable Source was able to produce the custom wire harnesses to tight tolerances of ± .125″. Although this tolerance was able to meet the customer’s specifications, more exacting tolerances on long production runs can be met by Quality Cable when they couple their high-speed Komax wire processor and crimping press. These custom wire harnesses were going to see rugged duty, so they were carefully checked for crimp heights, lengths, and electrical shorts. Pull force testing was used to guarantee the tightness of the terminals. Quality Cable Source was able to provide 1,000 of these custom wire harness sub-assemblies in only two weeks, which were delivered by Quality’s truck to a customer in Northwest Illinois.
